As of last night, 5/16/18, the Allentown City Council voted 4-3 in favor of the decriminalization ordinance for the city of Allentown. The mayor now must decide within the next 10 days whether he will back this decision or veto it.
This ordinance would decriminalize a small amount of cannabis. Small possessions (up to 30 grams of flower or 8 grams of concentrates) would be handled as a summary offense similar to that of a parking ticket. This simply means that the person would be responsible for a fine as compared to the fines and possible jail time that come along with the normal procedure of processing small possessions as a misdemeanor crime.
The council also passed resolutions that will allow people with past small possession charges to petition and potentially expunge their charges. Another resolution was passed urging Harrisburg to follow similarly at the state level. If all ordinances and resolutions go through this will be a huge step in the right direction for Allentown and Pennsylvania as a whole!
