Back to Basics: Capsules/Medical Edibles
Today’s Back to Basics post will highlight capsules and medical edibles. As of now the PA DOH has not approved any candy or infused food edibles. That unfortunately means you will not be able to find your go to gummies or favorite hard candy edibles in a Pennsylvania dispensary (for now). On the other hand you can still find a similar effect and relief with a capsule form of mmj.
Capsules are available in a variety of ratios to provide options for patients. For patients who suffer from severe anxiety a 10:1, 6:1, or 1:1 ratio of CBD to THC capsule may be the ideal dosage. For example, a 6:1 capsule will provide relief from social or generalized anxiety while still allowing the patient to focus and remain clear headed throughout their day.
For those who suffer from chronic or debilitating pain a higher ratio of THC to CBD may be needed to relieve pain and achieve desired effects. A capsule with a 10:1, 6:1 or 2:1 ratio of THC to CBD will help relieve pain and inflammation that causes discomfort. Patients with a lower tolerance to THC or are not as experienced with consuming edibles should discuss this with their budtender or dispensary pharmacist to see what product is best suited for their needs. It is recommended to start with a low dose tincture and slowly titrate up the THC to build a tolerance to it. This will allow the patient to consume more THC to alleviate pain without causing intoxication or brain fog often associated with overconsumption.
Typical onset for a capsule is between 30-90 minutes with peak effects that can last for 2-3 hours. The relief and effects of medibles can last for a duration 6-9 hours depending on the patients tolerance, metabolism and other factors. Capsules are a great way to find relief throughout the entire day or night without having to medicate multiple times. One con to medicating with capsules would be finding your desired dose. Since these products are prepackaged in a set dose and cannot be divided into multiple doses it can be difficult to find your ideal dosage. It is recommended that new patients start low and increase edible doses slowly over time. If you have any questions or comments please reach out to us.
